Love and support is pretty much it, I agree. But, if they get too wrapped up in their own heads, sometimes you just need to give 'em a good whack and flat-out tell them how wrong they are. Trust me, that's how I did it, and the guy's my husband now.

You can't directly. You can help them improve it, I suppose. But you need to be careful they don't become dependent on you for their newfound self-esteem or it will crumble when you are not around.

Oryou will remember that. Right now they don't have self-esteem at all, so fragile self-esteem would be better, but not much better.

There's no one way to answer that. But I think you believe in them, first. Tell them how it is you feel, and back them up as far as you can; but also trust them to face their own hurt. Rely on them too, and trust their decisions. Even if things don't change right away, don't ever believe it won't make a difference. Don't ever assume it's had no effect since your words may be what's best right now.

What's most important is that you're patient, I guess. Actions go a lot further than words, and just your presence means more than you'd think, sometimes.

You can't really force improvement on other people. They have to want to make the change and do the work themselves. The best you can really do in this case is if you see them talking bad about themselves, try to redirect the conversation to their more positive traits.
